    Friday Grab Bag – 02/02/2018

    Created by

    |

Welcome to the first Grab Bag of 2018, and what an exciting year ahead we have planned!

Our first newsletter of the year went out earlier in the week, so make sure to check your emails. If you are not signed up, you can do so by entering your email address on this sign up page. In the meantime, you can view the complete newsletter in your browser here.

Thanks to everyone for your questions! If you have any game related questions for our DAoC Devs, please send them in through our Grab Bag submission form. Please note this is for game questions, feedback should be sent in through our feedback form.

    On to the questions! 🙂

Does mastery of focus affect the chance of proc styles to land? If so how is it calculated?

Yes. Mastery of Focus effectively raises the level of the spell by its listed amount for all spells cast (including style procs). Style procs have their resistances calculated based on the level of the style, so a level 39 style has a level 39 spell’s resist rate vs level X targets. The Mastery of Focus realm ability can raise that style’s spell level, depending on the amount of MoF trained, up to a maximum of a level 50 spell.

All spells have a base chance of 10% to be resisted, so a level 50 style proc will still get resisted at around that 10% rate, on average. However, a level 12 style proc with no Mastery of Focus will see around a 30-35% resist rate vs a level 50 target and a level 34 style proc without MoF would have a 15-20% resist rate, on average.

Hi, is there a reason why, in the Enchanter’s enchantment line, the spells Enchantment of Ice, Stone, Fire and Mana cancels my Maddening Scalars wolf shape-shift, while Enchantment of Truth and Zeal do not? Is this by design or a bug? If it is by design, what is the purpose?

    Thanks!

The Enchantment of Ice, Stone, Fire, and Mana are offensive proc buffs while the Enchantment of Truth and Zeal are not. Since Maddening Scalars’ shapeshift is connected to an offensive proc as well, it gets overwritten by the more powerful enchantment procs. This same behaviour can be found with the Champion’s Call of the Champion buff or any other group-targeted class-based offensive proc.

One potential solution to this is looking at Maddening Scalars itself (as well as other item-based proc/shapeshift combos like Atlantis Tablet where the proc is rather weak/negligible). The offensive proc (a small Damage-over-time) involved with this shapeshift is fairly outdated now and not really the main reason for using the item – the shapeshift. So we could simply remove the proc aspect from Maddening Scalars and alleviate this issue without too much negative impact or overall change to class abilities.

Why are the procs on the warrior blood seal two-handed weapons damage to power rather than damage to health or damage to endurance?

The short answer is that technically, there are no damage-to-health or damage-to-endurance functions. The longer answer is that even though it’s damage-to-power, the main function of the proc is to reduce damage taken by the warrior and their group as well as restore power to their group.

It’s been awhile since you opened up races for some classes to use like luri bm, are you planning to open more races and when if yes.

Yes, we are planning to open up a few more pairings when the new race respec feature is in. The recent server and client stability issues have pushed back that feature a bit, but it’s still on track for the first half of this year.

We’ve noticed that the drop rate on Frozen Weapons appears lower than last year’s Frozen Caverns event. What gives?

This is correct and a mistake on our part. The reward chance was set so that on average 1 weapon dropped per group, per run through the Challenge mode. That is unintentionally lower than last year and so we’ve upped the chance so that on average 3-4 weapons will drop per group, per run. We’ve lowered the overall chance to get a potion to help compensate the other item drop chances as well. This is live as of this posting. Happy hunting!

Here’s to the year ahead 🙂

    See you in the frontiers!

Frozen Caverns and Ghost Keep Events

    Created by

    |

The following events are now live until February 13th, 2018!

    Frozen Cavern Event

    • Venture to the Frozen Cavern and test yourself against the chill… and its cunning inhabitant: Jack Frost!
    • Visit Njord in the following locations to enter the instance of your choice:

      • Albion: near Merlin’s Tower in Camelot
      • Midgard: near the Burial Grounds in Jordheim
      • Hibernia: near the Chamber of Magic in Tir na Nog
    • Two modes exist for this instance: Normal and Challenging

      • The Normal mode has a chance to drop 1 of the following rewards:

        • Frozen chestpieces
        • Frozen and other mythirians
        • Infernal sleeves
        • Darkness Falls jewelry
        • Supremacy, celerity, or omni-regen potions
        • A Cracked Ice Crystal
      • The Challenging mode has a chance to drop 1 of the following rewards:

        • Frozen weapons
        • Frozen chestpieces
        • Frozen mythirians only
        • Darkness Falls jewelry
        • Supremacy, celerity, or omni-regen potions
        • A Cracked Ice Crystal
        • In addition to having a chance at the weapons, the chance at the mythirians and darkness falls jewelry is much higher. The chestpiece chance is the same in both modes.
    • Loot no longer drops directly from Jack Frost, instead a loot chest is spawned when he is defeated.

      • Players can interact with the chest and receive 1 guaranteed reward per day but can still participate in the instance as many times as desired.
      • This chest will despawn after 20 seconds, so be sure to grab your loot quickly!
    • The Frozen Cavern instance will be available until February 13th, 2018.

    Ghost Keep Event

    • Members of each realm should make haste to their ghostly ambassador to strengthen their realm’s cause:

      • Albion – See the Ancient Paladin in the Catterick Hamlet relic town
      • Midgard – See the Ancient Thane in the Godrborg relic town
      • Hibernia – See the Ancient Champion in the Crair Treflan relic town
    • Players should ask the ‘Ancient’ NPCs for a [progress] report to be directed to the current task at hand.

      • These NPCs offer two quests during the ‘supply’ phase of the event that can only be obtained and completed during that phase.
      • Once a ghost keep has been triggered by a realm, the ‘supply’ phase ends for all three realms and these NPCs will direct players to defend or attack the appropriate ghostly keep lord!
      • Be sure to visit this NPC at each phase to ensure you pick up any available quests.
    • Earn extra realm points for completing the tasks throughout each phase of the event!
    • A successfully summoned ghostly keep lord will offer the Ring of the Summoned reward, along with a quest for the Ghostly Medal of Valor!
    • For more in-depth information, our handy guide explains the phases of this event in detail!
    • Please note that realm point bonuses do not affect the RP rewards from this event’s quests.
    • Players who obtained the Ghostly Medal of Valor last year can obtain one more with this event.

      • The Ghostly Medal of Valor is now able to be traded.
    • The Ghost Keep event will be available until February 13th, 2018.

    Live Server Maintenance – Ywain

    Created by

    |

Update 12:40 PM EST / 5:40 PM GMT: Ywain is once again open and available to all players!

The Ywain server will be coming down today (11:00 AM EST / 4:00 PM GMT) to perform some additional maintenance to address the in-game delays with gameplay and chat.

Servers are expected back up within 2 hours.

We also want to provide a bit more context for these in-game delays that many players are experiencing. All of our servers and services are hosted on the cloud and are affected by the recent software updates required to mitigate the Meltdown vulnerability. We heavily rely on these cloud services to run the game as smoothly as possible.

For more information on the recently discovered CPU vulnerability issues, please check out this article.

Unfortunately, the New Frontiers region on the Ywain server was only temporarily fixed by our configuration change last Friday. We started noticing more delays on Saturday afternoon and have been trying some behind-the-scenes fixes that don’t involve downtime since then; none of which have fully resolved the issues. Fortunately, all other servers and services were fixed by that Friday downtime and are still looking good and performing better than ever.

With this downtime today, we will be trying a more robust configuration change to Ywain that we are hopeful will fix its remaining issues as well. Thank you all for your patience and understanding!

The Ywain server will be coming down today (11:00 AM EST / 4:00 PM GMT) to perform maintenance intended to address some in-game delays with gameplay and chat.

Servers are expected back up within 4 hours.

We’ve noticed some poorer performance than normal in New Frontiers and want to make a configuration change to our server hosting to try and address it prior to the weekend.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we perform this downtime.

Update: Ywain, Gaheris, and Pendragon are now online and open to players! Archived servers are still undergoing maintenance and will be up within the next couple of hours.

The Ywain, Gaheris, Pendragon and all archived servers will be coming down tomorrow, January 3rd (5:45 AM EST / 10:45 AM GMT) to perform an Amazon server hosting security update.

Due to the amount of servers and background-processes under maintenance, servers are expected back up within 10 hours. Intermittent downtime may be noticed with the Account Center and the Herald websites but any issues reaching those sites should clear up within a few minutes.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we perform this extended downtime.

    Producer’s Letter: 2018 and Beyond

    Created by

    |

Another exciting year in Dark Age of Camelot is almost in the books and another, even more exciting year is about to begin! Even more exciting, you say? Unquestionably – but I can’t just spoil things right away, you’ll have to read through the letter to find out why!

There are three major development goals that we intend to accomplish over the next year.

    1. Make Realm vs Realm the best experience possible. This means returning RvR’s focus to the combat and realm war.
    2. Improve the returning player experience. Streamline and update the many avenues to getting a character back up to speed.
    3. Grow the game’s population. More marketing, community engagement, a continued focus on user experience (UX) updates, and new incentives to play.

It’s not quite all about exciting announcements though, I’d also like to spend some time reviewing the past year and how it fits in with our future goals.

This past year has seen many changes: a massive PvE campaign, A Dragon’s Curse, that introduced engaging instance encounters and tons of new loot; we also added new daily quests and solo-oriented objectives in RvR, introduced the MTX Mithril currency, the new cosmetic patterning system, introduced the official item database download to our website, toned down item ablative-stacking, and made several class and RvR adjustments to continue to address your ongoing feedback.

Many of these features set the table for the year ahead. The Mithril currency gives us the needed flexibility to meet our stated development goals in many ways and will of course let us introduce the much-requested race, gender, and name respecs as well as account-to-account character transfers in the year ahead.

Additionally, much of the content released this past year, yes – even the Dragon’s Curse campaign, helps us meet our goals. The updates to RvR and classes speak for themselves to this point, but there’s much more on the way to ensure Dark Age of Camelot continues its status as the best PvP MMORPG of all time.

First, it all starts with making the best way to earn realm points be from killing players. The new daily quests and the new RP bonuses affecting kills only are a great first step towards this and we’ll continue to ensure kills from RvR, rather than RvE or non-kill quests, are the most effective way to earn realm points.

Second brings us to keeps and towers. These have always been intended to be challenging and very rewarding realm objectives which require strategy and realm-collaboration and coordination to capture and defend. We’ve been listening to feedback from players from all play-styles, and our plan is to improve this system. This doesn’t mean simply ramping up guard difficulty – we still think players are and should be the most important defenders of their realm’s keeps and towers. This does mean an increase in door and wall difficulty though; with specific keeps being more or less difficult than others.

With that, we’d also like to explore adding some additional keep-based objectives around a few to start and eventually every keep in each realms’ frontier if players enjoy the dynamic. These new objectives would be capturable and would activate benefits to attacking or defending when that is under siege. Measures will be taken to ensure that a simple, yet effective level of strategy be required to ensure that keep sieges are a much more dynamic and engaging RvR component.

We’d also like to extend many of these ideas to the battlegrounds (we may even use the BGs as a proving ground for these features before deploying them to the New Frontiers). Finally, we’d like to address some of the art-related layout issues with the keeps such as making the inner keeps roof heights’ higher than the outer walls and towers; along with better protection the oil areas for defenders.

For classes, we know that there are still some loose ends to clean up and will continue to gauge your feedback and adjust accordingly.

The Dragon’s Curse campaign will help us towards our goal of improving the returning player experience. As we streamline the many returning player-related features like doppelganger shards, king’s champion armor, illustrious bounty point armor, supply quests, and others it gives us something to coalesce those features around.

The campaign also let us invest in a more engaging and robust instance-based PvE system. Rather than add PvE content that can be easily completed with a bot (or seven) in tow, we strongly feel that content requiring an active group is the most conducive to growing an engaged community over the long term. Guilds and groups are the beating heart of Dark Age of Camelot. They are where many of us met our first friends in-game, and the camaraderie forged on the battlefields and during many epic encounters have, for so many, grown into something much more important and permanent.

Aside from any tweaks to the Dragon’s Curse campaign and how it pertains to the streamlining of the returning player experience, we have no plans for any more major PvE-related updates this year.

In addition to improving returning player experiences, we’ll be taking a look at new player experiences as well. A major feature involved with this is updating the quickbar UX. The two major quickbar issues we plan to address are that users can’t move already-placed abilities to different slots and that the only way to bind quickbar slots to key-presses is via an outdated and sometimes confusing /qbind command.

Another focus over the past year has been community engagement with the re-introduction of the bi-weekly Grab Bag and monthly Newsletter. The Grab Bag will remain as a gameplay-focused question-and-answer session and the Newsletter as an avenue for community spotlights, monthly recaps, and previews of what’s to come. Both of these have served us well as a means of providing important information to the community, but after reviewing their impact, we can do more!

Speaking of which, the aforementioned RvR ideas were brainstormed and discussed directly with several battlegroup leaders on a conference call with us this past fall and this direct communication is something we’ll be continuing with other groups of players in the coming year.

Continuing in that vein, we’re pleased to announce a monthly developer live-stream to hear your feedback, answer questions, and generally interact directly with you all! This will be hosted on our official Twitch channel by yours truly (along with other devs and knights) and will be a casual way to address your concerns and talk about upcoming plans and changes while we enjoy playing DAoC alongside you all! Depending how things go, we may increase the frequency or adjust the dynamic of the events. The first one will be announced shortly after the new year!

To recap: improving RvR, tightening up the overall gameplay with bug fixes and streamlining the returning and new player experiences, and adding the various UX features will be our sole focus in ramping up through the first half of 2018. That means less focus on new additions and more focus on fixing and improving our existing systems. Ramping up to what you ask?

    Well…

We’re thrilled to announce a new way for players to experience Dark Age of Camelot’s iconic realm vs realm warfare for free with Dark Age of Camelot: Endless Conquest!

The Endless Conquest will be a new account type that allows players to enjoy Dark Age of Camelot through level 50 (and beyond) for free, without a paid subscription, forever. Endless Conquest players will be able to level all the way to 50 on a limited selection of classes, participate fully in RvR, and earn Master Levels, Champion Levels, and Realm Rank – to a point.

The Endless Conquest is coming Fall 2018 and we couldn’t be more excited. While permanently free, there are limitations involved with the Endless Conquest accounts such as character slots, leveling rates, house ownership, item trade and storage, being limited to Ywain and Gaheris servers only, and more. Please visit our FAQ for the full details we have so far, and please continue to check as new information on this exciting new development will be added as we move into the new year.

And that finally leads us to the potential of an alternative ruleset server. As things stand now, there are two major obstacles preventing the launch of one in the near term (as in this next year). The first is that everyone seems to have a different view of what the perfect alternative server ruleset would include. We knew this going in, and feel confident we can deliver a ruleset that would be both highly engaging and appealing to a wide swath of former and new players alike.

That being said – as we have previously stated, we would never create an alternative ruleset server unless we were confident in the Ywain server’s population and health. This is the second and much more challenging obstacle. The Endless Conquest is going to be a huge step in overcoming it. Again – we are thrilled to finally announce and talk about our plans. 2018 is going to be an excellent year for Dark Age of Camelot!

There’s even more on the way – like the new website and official forums – that just can’t all fit into this already lengthy letter! Stay glued to Herald for more details on the Endless Conquest and other updates.

From everyone at Broadsword have a safe, warm, and happy holiday!

    Onward,

    John Thornhill
    Producer
