    Highlights from v1.91 (Daniel's Quest)

We are proud to introduce a quest that was written by someone very special. The Make-a-Wish foundation contacted us on behalf of Daniel, a young gentleman with Marfan Syndrome, whose dream is to become a game developer. Daniel wrote up his idea for a quest based on his character and his companion and we've taken his wonderful ideas and implemented them in Dark Age of Camelot. The quest is called 'Saving Zarees' and is available from the NPC 'Tym' in the starting area (Cotswold, Mularn, and Mag Mell) of each realm. The quest is available at two level ranges to make it accessible to as many people as possible. It is available for characters level 7 to 10 and characters level 48 to 50. We invite you log in and try out your version of Daniel’s quest. Send in your feedback; which will be compiled and sent off to Daniel, our honorary quest developer!

Dev Diary: Xatryn, Assistant Manager of Customer Support

As the Assistant Manager of Customer Support, what are your primary responsibilities?

I oversee the entire day-to-day operations of Customer Support. I also serve as the point of contact between Customer Service and Development, Operations, Quality Assurance, Community and IT on CS-related issues that require assistance from another department.

What was your "welcome to the game industry" moment when it hit you that you were really making games for a living?

While I do not develop content for the game, the first time I noticed I was having an impact on changes made to the game I love was the first patch note that fixed an issue I reported to QA on behalf of a player. I understood at that moment that every single person here has the ability to help mold a game into what it is, and what it will become in the future. Not everyone here has a Developer title, but we’re all part of what makes a great game.

What is the status of the game? What are you currently working on?

Dark Age of Camelot recently upgraded the Frontier, the Dragon Campaign is in post campaign. Halloween is over, but there is another holiday coming up…

What excites you the most about Dark Age of Camelot?

The players. I absolutely love ‘em. They’re the reason I’ve never pursued a position elsewhere at EA Mythic. I feel their pain when they encounter an issue, and I share in their happiness when we can assist them. Not a day goes by where I’m not having a discussion within my department or another department about a way to better their experience with us.

What other titles have you worked on in the past? In what capacity?

When I arrived at Mythic, it was my first experience in the gaming industry. Previously, I was a DJ. It’s not nearly as cool as you might think. =P

What are your favorite video/computer games of all time? What games are you playing right now? What game should the reader be playing if he's not?

My favorite video game of all time would have to be Moon Patrol for the Atari 2600. I swear I still have a dent on my hand from the controller. Or should I say controllers? I broke a few!

I wasn’t a PC gamer until EverQuest, which I played on a roommate’s PC one random day. It was my introduction to computer gaming and MMOs all at once. I moved from EQ to Dark Age of Camelot about two weeks after it had released. To this day, I’ve not played a game more than DaoC.

I’m currently playing DaoC, WAR and WoW. My computer needs upgrading, and desperately hates me at this time.

What music are you listening to right now?

Currently playing: Orbital – Halcyon +on + on

I’ve taken a dangerous right turn with music selection in the car, and I didn’t use my blinker. Country. My significant other is crazy for it, so I’m giving it a whirl. Normally, I’m listening to vocal or progressive trance.

Is there a recent movie you've seen or book/comic you read that you'd recommend to others?

I’m slacking on new releases. I just watched Hot Fuzz, and it was darn decent (but not as good as Shaun of the Dead). I tore through the last Harry Potter book on the same day it was released. I’m currently re-reading the first fantasy series I picked up as a younger reader, the Sword of Shanarra series by Terry Brooks. Thus far, it’s still as good as I remember it being!

Anything else you want to add?

“No pleasure, no rapture, no exquisite sin greater…than central air.”

    Fan Fiction: The Winter Wraith
From the memoirs of Horbath the Kobold Bondancer.
    Based on a true story.

The winter snows fall around me. The warmth of the fire is quickly fading from my body. The task before me weighs heavy on my soul. The guild has commanded me to run from Glenlock Faste to Bledmeer Faste. I must confront the Wraith of Albion in the winter snows of the north.
I hear the melodies and they haunt me on the wind. The sweet melody of death and the beautiful harmony of destruction tell me the minstrel is there. He is waiting; waiting to consume me. I clutch my staff firmly as I prepare myself. I have already received blessings from a shaman and my quickness and strength are elevated above their norms. I have summonsed the armor of bone, bolstered my own bones, and suppressed the damage that I take. I only have one more thing to do before I start my quest.
I speak the words and make the motions. The spell is cast. The undead Viking Commander rises from the ground and in a raspy voice says “Command me, oh master!” As a Bonedancer I call forth the warriors of old to fight for me, but one is not enough. I reach into the sprit world, not once, but three times more. Three fossil healers appear under the command of my Viking Commander. They will serve me well.
I am ready. I stand outside Glenlock’s tall and secure walls, and look at the snow covered ground leading to the river. I start to walk forward and my foot moves reluctantly. My will forces my body to move beyond its fear. Mikov is out there. I can hear his harp vaguely on the snowy breeze. The Wraith of Albion is my prey. His speed makes him impossible for me to catch. I must leave bait for him to attack, and then I will make my move. That bait is me.
I sprint across the Blodwyn Bridge leaving Gaute Island. I then head west along the river. The snow is falling heavily and I wonder if Odin has sent the winter snow to help me or hinder me. The crunch of snow under my boots is deafening, but I know the sounds I will hear will be much greater.
The attack comes swiftly from behind. I feel sleepy and I stop dead in my boots, mesmerized by the beautiful lullaby. My Viking Commander and his healers stop frozen, affected by the spell as well. A bellow of sound hits me next, and I am stunned. I feel my confidence of victory fade. If I am not successful, a trip to Valhalla may elude me and I may forever be lost in the depths of Niflheim.
A fury suddenly builds within me. I remember my guild mates that are depending on me. I remember my fellow Bonedancers who died to this fiend. I force my mind back to the surface and purge the effects of the stunning melodies. I turn to face the wraith. Mikov gleams in his chain mail. The mere sight of him is enough to frighten a berserker, and he is not alone. He has a frost stallion with him. The horse made of enchanted ice attacks me and I feel my body temperature plummet and I begin to shiver. Shards of ice from the frozen hoofs slice through my Guard of Valor. A deafening cacophony hits me like the kick of a mammoth. Next, a Dischordant Howl hits me as well. I feel the blood drip from my ears and the tang of it on my lips. I wonder how such a sweet a sound can hurt me so much. My knees are weak and threaten to buckle, but my rage has kept its fire. Now it’s my turn.
I gaze upon the ground. I call forth the Thornweeds from their wintry grave. They rise through the ice and snow and wrap around my opponents legs. The Thornweeds grow through the links of chain and pierce the flesh of the Wraith and I hear him cry out in agony. I feel warmth and pleasure in his misery. I turn away and start to run. The Thornweeds part for me and I make my way unhindered. This is not true for the wraith. He and his thrall are slowed, but not stopped. He is relentless.
I turn from my retreat and see the wraith struggling toward me with his massive sword drawn. I see his blood trickle from his wounds, and I smile. I reach into his soul and feel his life force and command it to come to me. It flies from him and enters me. He cries out again. It isn’t enough. I do a quick incantation and the Death of Souls flies from my hands. It strikes hard. The Wraith’s blood leaves the pours of his skin and, evaporates leaving a red cloud in the frigged air. I feel his sword penetrate my right shoulder. It was a good fight, but I feel like I can do nothing against the onslaught of the Wraith and his minion. I begin to loose hope, but then fortune looks down on me this day.
I see my commander break the Wraith’s deadly sleep and move toward my enemy from behind. I use my summons mastery and command one hundred spirits of the dead to inhabit my commander. He grows instantly ten hands taller and he raises his bone sword. The titanic sword bites down hard on the Wraith’s left shoulder blade. The blood begins to flow. I feel renewed as the Commander’s healers cast spells of rejuvenation on me. They too are now free of the Wraith’s wispy sleep. My hope is renewed, and I press the attack.
The Thornweeds continue their assault. I once again command the life to come from my adversary to myself, and it leaps to me again. The Commander assaults the Wraith again. I hear the tearing of flesh and the screech of metal as the mammoth bone sword cleaves into his side. He bellows once again; this time in agony. He falls to one knee. I can’t believe what I am seeing. I have him down, but I know its not over. Not yet.
I cast Death of Souls one more time and the Wraith is banished from the snows of Midgard. Mikov falls to the ground dead. I have won. My Commander quickly makes short work of the stallion. I sink into the snow. Blessed be Odin. The body of my foe is still warm before me. My victory makes me shudder; I did not know the inner strength that I possess, but I do now.
After I recover, I take the wraith’s wicked sword and continue to Bledmeer Faste. I am greeted by my guild with triumphant admiration. Exhausted I say “I, Horbath the Bonedancer present this sword from the winter Wraith to Arsham leader of the guild, Legion of Uruz.” I hand the sword to the proud shaman. He holds it high above his head, and all of Midgard chants my name in victory. My honor has been granted by the gods and my trip to Valhalla is assured.
I am now the Wraith, and I will now prowl the winter. Albion and Hibernia shall feel the shiver of the new Winter Wraith.
